Zanzibar is a name that almost seems to belong to a mythical place, an exotic land of great riches, where traders came with gold and ivory, where dhows offloaded their treasures, where the scent of cloves hung heavy in the air and a brutal slave trade enabled the Omani Sultans to amass great wealth and wield great power. Zanzibar is still redolent of its exotic past and the Karafuu Hotel is the perfect base from which to explore it.

Just over an hour from the airport, next to the brilliant turquoise sea and silver sands, Karafuu was built in harmony with the environment and uses traditional Zanzibari materials: roofs of makuti palm thatch and walls of coral. Furnishings are locally hand crafted in gleaming woods. Open air public areas are complimented by the more intimate, yet spacious, cottages and standard rooms. Four restaurants ensure that all tastes are deliciously catered for. A lovely freeform seawater swimming pool has underwater stools at the bar at which you may sip divine cocktails.

The hotel diving centre offers expert instruction and the dives are fabulous. Snorkeling, waterskiing, canoeing, deep sea fishing, banana rodeo and tennis are just some of the other sports on offer.
