Tanzania Beach Resort: Tembo House Hotel
In the early 19th century a holding place for slaves, in the late 19th century the American Consulate, this lovely old building became the headquarters of Cowasjee Dinshaw and Bros, merchants whose name was a household word on the East African coast. They were contractors to the British navy and military, importers of piece goods from England and the USA and agents for many other businesses. Now known as the Tembo House Hotel it lies surrounded by other historic buildings on the waterfront of Zanzibar Town.
Tembo House Hotel is decorated in traditional Zanzibari style and is furnished with traditional pieces and lovely antiques. The lounge faces the Indian Ocean and visitors may watch the sunlight sparkling on the water and the trading dhows gliding into port. The high ceiling rooms and the heavily carved traditional furniture reflects the various cultural influences on Zanzibar: Arab; European; African and those of the many nations with which the island traded. Full air conditioning, telephones and mini-bars ensure that the historical ambience is not all pervading. · Swimming pool |
