Jack's Camp was originally established by the late Jack Bousfield while on a trapping expedition in the 1960's. The choice of such a unique locale owes much to his original taste for the savage beauty of a now forgotten Africa. Jack was immediately inspired by this special place and envisaged an innovative safari. His son, Ralph, is now pursuing Jack's vision.
The camp's hub, a romantic canvas pavilion of low spires and finials, could have come from a medieval jousting tourney, but for the deciduous green colour. Three poles support the main chamber where everyone meets for lavish and elegant meals at a long communal dining table.
Ten roomy and stylish tents, each with en-suite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers, have been fashioned in a traditional-cum-classical style and are set into a palm grove, thus creating an oasis of comfort and peace, in complete contrast to the otherwise stark environment. The tent décor includes Persian carpets and cool cotton sheets - again creating a remarkable contrast to the view from your tent’s veranda.
By the use of four wheel drive quad bikes, guests are able to explore a hitherto unknown and otherwise impenetrable area in an exhilarating, but eco-sensitive way. Jack's Camp was voted '12th Best Leisure Hotel' in the World by Condé Naste Traveller Magazine readers -making it the 'best Safari Camp in the World'!
During the wet season (from November to March), the landscape transforms. Breeding flocks of flamingo and other migratory species descend on the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest materialise, drawn by the lush grass, and for several months, the desert is teeming with game and the attendant predators. However, a safari at Jack's Camp is also a complete desert experience focusing as it does on the year-round inhabitants such as aardvark, oryx and springbok. This is the only place where guests are practically guaranteed of seeing the rare brown hyena, and be able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated but wild meerkat!
Jack’s Camp guides are a diverse group, often graduate students who combine research with guiding, they team up with a group of Zu’hoasi San to take guests on unforgettable morning’s walks and game drives.
