Tanzania Safaris: Ruaha River Lodge
Overlooking the Great Ruaha River in the Ruaha National Park, the lodge blends into its natural surroundings to enable visitors to feel themselves part of the wild. Ruaha, one of the largest national parks in Africa and is comparatively unknown and, due to its remoteness, remains unspoiled. The vast wilderness is rich in wildlife and contains a wide variety that includes greater and lesser kudu, roan and sable antelope and huge herds of elephant and buffalo. Nearly five hundred bird species have been sighted within the park. The exciting Great Ruaha River features large numbers of hippo and crocodile. The waters attract lion, leopard, hunting dog and numerous other species such as waterbuck, impala, giraffe, warthog and eland. Grant's gazelle, ostrich and cheetah may be seen on the plains. Accommodation is within “bandas” rooms built from stone and thatch, which provide the perfect setting in chic to relax between bush excursions. From the seclusion of your verandah you can watch animals descend from the hills in order to quench their thirst at the river. The dining bandas and bars, elevated above the river, combine comfort and coolness with unrivalled panoramic views. The delicious food, made with the produce from the owner's highland farm, competes with the distractions of the spectacular scenery. Game drives through the park using one of the Lodge's specially adapted vehicles, take the traveler into wildlife territory where refreshing cold drinks and picnics may be enjoyed in scenic surroundings. Alternatively, short walking safaris, led by an experienced guide, give you the opportunity to “touch the wild”. The views here have been described as “the finest of any wildlife lodge or camp in Africa
