The Area
- The Skeleton Coast Park is one of the planet's most inhospitable yet hauntingly beautiful places – a life-altering safari.
- Wilderness Safaris is the ONLY concessionaire in the Skeleton Coast Park and offers guests 300 000 hectares (741 316 acres) of untouched wilderness to experience and enjoy. The amount of private space per guest amounts to a staggering 25 000ha (61 776 acres)!
- Guest numbers are further restricted to a maximum of 12 per scheduled trip due to the fragile and pristine landscape, making it one of the most remote places on the African continent.
Concession Features:
- Strikingly beautiful topography and phenomenal diversity – littered with bleached whalebones and skeletal remains of shipwrecks (now fast being devoured by the salty and vigorous coastline).
- Freshwater springs and morning coastal fog off the Atlantic Ocean sustain a surprising amount of life despite the general aridity including predators such the reclusive brown hyaena and unique desert-adapted lion.
- Inland secret water seeps attract gemsbok, springbok, giraffe, elephant and Hartmann's mountain zebra.
- Localised bird specials include Damara Tern and Gray's Lark – both breeding here.
- Smaller life ranges from reptiles such as endemic Peringuey's adder to desert plated lizards to insects such as fog-basking tenebrionid beetles.
Activities
 The focus is on space, seclusion and personal experience of this unique, wild and desolate environment. Excursions generally encompass the whole day with dinner and breakfast enjoyed at camp.
- Nature drives take in the remote landscapes of windswept gravel plains, towering blonde dunes and explore the ephemeral river systems and springs in search of arid-adapted wildlife.
- Ecologically sensitive areas are visited only on foot to discover specially- adapted plant species such as the area's renowned lichen fields, Lithops (stone plants) and the iconic Welwitschia.
Other sights exclusive to this area include visits to:
- Unique clay castles of the Hoarusib River
- Rocky Point
- Cape fur seal colonies
- Salt pans
- Shipwreck remains
Culturally, Wilderness Safaris guests learn about and visit:
- Remote Himba villages – one of the last nomadic stone age tribes of Africa
- The remains of shelters used by Khoisan people centuries ago.
Air Access
This enormous private concession is accessed by light aircraft only (roughly 3-hour flight from Windhoek on Cessna 208), thereby ensuring utmost seclusion and exclusivity. Seeing the Skeleton Coast from the air is an important component of the overall experience.
The Camp
The camp is built on an island in the dry Khumib riverbed about 20km (15 miles) inland from the coastline. To help preserve this pristine environment, Skeleton Coast Camp was built in an eco-friendly manner with minimal impact on the environment. The camp's location has been deliberately chosen with easy access to the ephemeral river systems, the Atlantic coast to the west and the Himba communities to the east.
