Botswana Safaris: XIGERA MOKORO TRAIL
There is no better way to experience the Okavango than to travel through it by mokoro, to walk and camp on its remote islands. Xigera, set right in the heart of the Okavango Delta, is the perfect place for such an encounter. The trails run every three days from mid-May to the end of October to fit in with the rise and fall of the annual flood.
At the airstrip, guests meet up with their experienced BaYei guides and drive to the starting point where the mokoros are boarded and set off into the wilderness. The mokoros carry equipment, drinks and food, as well as the guests and their personal luggage, so the group is completely self-contained and can operates at its own pace and needs. Camp is set up each day on an island, where meals are cooked on the campfire. There are bucket showers and a "long-drop" toilet. The tents are specially designed with their tops made out of netting to enhance the feeling of sleeping out under the stars, safe and secure for the night in comfortable bedrolls.
Each day excursions are made by mokoro to explore the Delta, its scenery and wildlife. Stops are made along the way to walk and explore. Plains game and birdlife are superb and elephant, buffalo and giraffe are frequently seen. All photos courtesy of Wilderness Safaris |
