South Africa Accommodations: Gorah Elephant Camp

Gorah Elephant Camp ~ Vintage 5 Camp

Gorah Elephant Camp

The private Gorah Sanctuary is home to one of the most dense populations of elephant on earth and lies in malaria-free Addo Elephant National Park, just a few hours drive from Port Elizabeth and the Garden Route. The lodge itself is based around Gorah House, a national monument dating back to 1856, which has been immaculately restored to its former colonial style. Elephant wander at will through the park and other game frequently encountered include: black rhino, buffalo, black-maned lion, zebra and antelope as well as excellent birdlife.

The 10 luxurious colonial tented suites with thatch canopies at Gorah are a haven in the wilderness. Mahogany furniture, gauze-draped four-posters, polished wood floors, smart bathrooms with hot showers and private decks overlooking the savannah belie the term tent in no uncertain terms. Colonial style fine dining with an African twist is in the dining room by a roaring log fire or under the stars in the boma. For relaxing moments between activities, sun loungers are scattered around the sundeck and freeform swimming pool.

With a much-frequented waterhole in front of the lodge, elephant everywhere, game drives in open land rovers or on a horse, the Gorah experience is as unique as it is memorable.
