Kalahari Plains Camp

Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares (12 million acres), one of the largest in the world.

The camp is beautifully situated on an immense pan and comprises 10 en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out above each one from which to enjoy the night skies. The main area with lounge, dining area and central bar also has a swimming pool and deck area. The tents and main area are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. Solar power provides electricity and hot water – making this camp 100% solar-powered – and innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside the units comfortable.

Thanks to the diversity of habitats, healthy game populations move through the area and are present to a greater or lesser degree all year long. But it is the summer months (end-November to April) with the advent of their rains that the desert truly comes to life. Short grasses sprout in the pan systems and fossil riverbeds and plains game such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest converge in their hundreds and thousands here to feed. This of course attracts predators such as lion and cheetah; in fact the abundance of game at this time of the year also leads to thrilling lion and cheetah hunts to be seen. During winter, the Kalahari is typically a dry desert-type system, with general game still easily seen including gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest and steenbok as well as their predators such as lion, one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa, leopard, brown hyaena and even caracal.

Guided game drives unlock the fascinating wildlife treasures found in this wonderful area. Kalahari Plains offers an interpretive "Bushman Walk" where guests gain life-changing insights into the unique culture of this fascinating people.

Kalahari Plains is easily combined with the Okavango Delta and Linyanti regions to provide a comprehensive Botswana experience – and in summer it is simply unbeatable as a wildlife destination. Central Kalahari Highlights

Xigera Camp

Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) is a luxury tented camp situated in the Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Xigera has something for everyone, in an area where there are no other Moremi camps and where permanent water all year round allows one to enjoy a variety of activities. Enjoy a true Delta experience while you sit back in a mokoro (dugout canoe) and silently glide through the tranquil Okavango waterways or watch the sunset and birds gliding home to roost from a motorboat on the Xigera Lagoon. When water levels permit, game drives (usually September to May) allow the opportunity to observe wildlife and the unique Delta scenery from the comfort of a Land Rover.

Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera consists of 10 luxuriously furnished tented rooms with en-suite facilities and outdoor shower. Each room is raised off the ground on a wooden deck offering superb views of the seasonal floodplain and waterhole. Meals and drinks are enjoyed under the thatch of the raised lounge, bar and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel. A traditional boma offers alternative dining under the African stars. Wooden walkways wind through the forest connecting the rooms to the main area. There is a plunge pool for cooling off and relaxation. The wooden footbridge, a unique feature to Xigera, connects Xigera Island to the next one and is often used by Lion and Leopard moving between the islands allowing guests great viewing opportunities. Birding in the area is excellent, with Pel’s Fishing Owl, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, African Skimmers and a host of eagles, vultures, raptors and kingfishers to be found. The area has the highest density of the rare Sitatunga antelope found anywhere in the Okavango Delta. Okavango Delta Highlights for Water Camps

DumaTau Camp

DumaTau Camp is a 10-roomed tented camp located in the private 125 000 hectare Linyanti Wildlife Reserve which borders onto the western boundary of Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. The camp is built on raised boardwalks under a shady grove of mangosteen trees, overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon on the Linyanti waterways. The source of the Savute Channel is close to the camp and game drives along the Savute are one of the highlights. The rooms are spacious, raised off the ground and under thatch with canvas walls allowing guests to enjoy the night sounds of Africa from the comfort of their beds. The bathroom facilities are en-suite and each room also has an outside shower. The main areas include a dining room, bar, lounge, curio shop, plunge pool and a special guest toilet with a fantastic view. The region has all the habitat diversity to make it a haven for wildlife. Activities are diverse and allow guests to spend time on the water (if water levels permit this), powerboat cruises, on land and occasionally on foot. Day and night game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles along the Savute Channel and the banks of Linyanti River. There are many hides in the area where guests can enjoy wildlife viewing up close and away from a vehicle. One of the best hides is right at the source of the Savute and many species of wildlife and birdlife can usually be enjoyed from this hide. The area is famous for its elephant concentrations in the winter months and for the great general game viewing all year. Huge herds of elephant congregate in winter along the waterways and lagoons and at waterholes that are located along the Savute channel. All the predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog feast on the prey species in the area including impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, lechwe and tsessebe. Toka Leya Camp

Toka Leya Camp is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River in the eastern sector of the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, some 12km up from the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Accommodation consists of 12 safari-style tents, each en-suite with a view of the magnificent Zambezi River. The camp’s dining and bar area are under a canopy of trees overlooking the River and there is swimming pool. Activities include a tour of the Falls on the Zambian side, game drives, river cruises and guided walks. Other activities on offer in the area at an additional charge include sunset cruises, helicopter flights, micro-lighting, canoeing, jet boating, white water rafting and fishing amongst others.

At 1708 metres wide, Victoria Falls is the most expansive curtain of water in the world and drops more than 100 metres into the sheer Zambezi Gorge. The Tonga and Makalolo peoples lived here for centuries before the Falls were ‘discovered’ by David Livingstone in 1855, who named them after his queen. Its local name – after which the national park is named – is Mosi-Oa-Tunya, “the Smoke that Thunders,” which describes accurately the huge spirals of spray that can be seen 30km away.

Located in the south-west corner of Zambia, the Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River are the central points in an area of spectacular scenic beauty: from the Falls themselves to the broad, picturesque course of the Zambezi River upstream, the rainforest adjacent and the stark jagged gorge downstream, the power and timelessness of nature’s forces are evident throughout.
