Gabon Safaris: TASSI SAVANNA CAMP
ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES
SCIENCE PROGRAM The Tassi area has a healthy population of western lowland gorilla and chimpanzee and has been chosen by the Max Planck Institute as an area in which to undertake a great ape habituation and research project. The research team is based at Tassi South, 10 km south of the Tassi camp. The project aims at habituating two groups of gorillas and one group of chimps to human presence, in the long term allowing visitors to easily find and observe these shy, elusive primates, while at the same time allowing researchers to gather data on all aspects of the their behaviour and ecology. THE AREA The Tassi / Louri area is an attractive mosaic of savanna, forest, swamp, and small coastal lagoons all in proximity to an endless stretch of beach. Getting there is a scenic, one-hour, 25 km drive from Loango Lodge. The area's diverse habitat ensures that most of the common wildlife can be seen all year and forest elephant, forest buffalo, red river hog and sitatunga can be regularly sighted from the camp itself. During the rainy season months of October to April, elephant and buffalo often feed on the grassland adjacent to the beach. ACTIVITIES During your stay at Tassi Camp, the following activities are available: · Various walks that showcase the surrounding habitat and wildlife |
