Day 1: Maun to Central Kalahari Game Reserve
On arrival at Maun International Airport you will be met by a representative from Uncharted Africa and assisted with boarding your light aircraft flight to Kalahari Plains airstrip in the Deception Pan area of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
Upon landing you will be met by your private Zoologist/Biologist guide and immediately set off on a slow meandering game drive before heading to your private camp where you spend the following four nights. Arrive in good time to unpack and have a refreshing bucket shower before settling down with an ice cold sundowner. With the setting desert sun as a dramatic backdrop your guide will give an informal presentation on the formation of the Kalahari valley.
It should be noted Central Kalahari Game Reserve regulations do not permit off road driving, walking or night drives.
Day 2: Exploration Day
This morning is an early start as you drive to Leopard Pan in the cool morning light. Watch out for honey badgers, jackal and other elusive predators. Lions and cheetah are around and there have been sightings of a population of wild dogs in this peaceful and isolated wilderness area. Back to camp for a sumptuous lunch. In the afternoon visit Deception Valley campsite made famous by the unorthodox Owens as this is where they wrote Cry of the Kalahari. The valleys are a unique ecosystem within the Kalahari and one can expect to find large concentrations of springbok and gemsbok grazing on the verdant beds of sweet desert grasses. Meerkat abound and there is always a good chance of spotting brown hyena as well as experiencing some unexpectedly good birding. Back to camp and an early night to prepare for tomorrow’s adventure.
Day 3: Exploration Day
Today is spent on a full day excursion with packed lunch to Passarge Valley seeking out predators and prey. Experience an in-depth immersion into the Kalahari ecology and wildlife including behavioural observations of cunningly desert adapted mammals and birds. Return to camp for a delicious dinner and a cosy evening under canvas.
Day 4: Exploration Day
Enjoy a lazy last day in the desert. Take a drive into the stabilised dune area to examine the variation in flora and fauna between the valley and dune ecologies. Sprawling acacia forest cedes to thick dune grasses and hardy bushes. Fleeting herds of gemsbok, the elusive Kalahari giraffe and the ever-present steenbok keep you company. The scenery is unlike any you will have experienced and a biological experience sure to exceed your expectations.
Day 5: Central Kalahari Game Reserve to Maun
After breakfast depart for Kalahari Plains airstrip where you board your flight to Maun International Airport.
